I like to believe in an ideal world. Even if I know better.
So when this morning I had finally taken the whole effort to lug my 10 very heavy, very long overdue books to the library and the librarian was checking the books out and hesitantly looks at me, I had the sinking feeling that my procrastination was going to bite me in the a**.
'How bad is the damage?', I ask. She slowly mouths out '1440'. Oops...I knew I shouldn't have waited that long! Procrastination is evil.
Before I even had a chance to open my wallet, she offers to bring this up to the library head and defend my case for a reduction. And I hadn't even said anything yet.
She came through with it you know. My processing fees were waived. I still paid for my overdues, but it was much less than the initial. Mistakes don't go unpunished. It was still my fault in part but I was relieved that I'd still have enough cash to at least have a decent meal this month.
The librarian with the kind eyes. She didn't have to do that, but she did. As I left the library, I wanted to do better for others. Kindness does that to you.
Pay it forward.
